The Riverfront Lounge: Turning a Pass-Through Space into a Destination

When a space feels "almost right" but misses the mark, here is how we used professional layering and local sourcing to unlock its full potential.

Every beautiful home has "the hyphen"—that essential transition space that connects life from one room to the next. In our latest project, The Riverfront Lounge, we were tasked with transforming a high traffic pass through area that, despite its high end bones, lacked a cohesive soul.

While the home featured stunning existing elements — Phillip Jeffries chocolate suede wallpaper, bronze Allied Maker sconces, and a beautiful custom white oak built in bench — the room wasn’t quite hitting the mark. It felt like a collection of beautiful objects rather than a designed experience.

The Architectural Foundation

Design is often about the "supporting actors." You can have a lead actor as stunning as luxury wallpaper, but without the right framing, it falls flat. We immediately noticed that the room lacked proper casings at the entry points. The wallpaper simply stopped against a 90-degree drywall turn, leaving the space feeling unfinished.

By introducing custom millwork and casings, we fully contained the wallpaper. This architectural refinement allowed for a clean transition between rooms and gave us the confidence to pull our color palette onto the ceiling, creating an immersive, dramatic atmosphere.

Scaling for the View

The original furniture layout was the biggest hurdle. The existing sofa was beautiful, but it was incorrectly scaled for the space. It dominated the wall, blocked the flow, and obscured the home's most significant feature: the expansive waterfront view.

We reimagined the layout by selecting a new sofa, perfectly scaled to the window span. We framed the windows with custom draperies in a fabric that blended tonally with the wallpaper, ensuring the view remained the hero. By flanking the sofa with end tables—and opting for a single, striking table lamp to break the symmetry—we created a balanced, inviting moment that encourages lingering.

The Soul of Local Sourcing

To achieve a sophisticated yet effortless coastal aesthetic, we turned away from big-box solutions and leaned into Charleston’s incredible local talent. An effortless home requires character, and you simply cannot replicate the soul of a vintage piece.

We curated the space with intentional finds from local favorites:

  • Wentworth: We sourced linen block-print throw pillows to add the natural, tactile depth that a solid-colored sofa requires.

  • Super Saturday Store: We layered these on a vintage blanket to bridge the gap between "styled" and "lived-in." This store also provided the soulful accessories that bring the bookshelves to life.

  • Shoppe Found: We discovered a beautiful vintage vessel and a vibrant yellow planter to ground our side table vignettes.

For the final layer of lighting, we turned to the iconic Urban Electric. Their quality is unmatched, and we chose a table lamp in their signature "Heirloom" finish. The way this finish patinas over time—walking the line between brass and silver—is a work of art. We paired it with a custom shade in Soane Britain fabric, introducing subtle, sophisticated color to the lounge.

The Final Reveal

A base-layer, custom-braided wool rug was the final piece of the puzzle. It anchored the room, connecting the two sides of the space across the central walkway without competing for attention.

This project is proof that you don't always need to start from scratch to create a show-stopping room. Sometimes, the difference between a house and a home lies in the details: proper scaling, intentional architecture, and the character that only comes from vintage, local sourcing.

Is your home feeling "almost there"? Sometimes, all it takes is a set of professional eyes to unlock your space’s full potential.
